The final instalment! Here at Monarch Paving we hope to educate the north shore. So that Vancouver can speak like a professional paver.
Maintenance Mix – A mixture of asphalt emulsion and mineral aggregate (see Monarch Paving Presents: Asphalt Speak Part 1) used in relatively small areas to patch holes, depressions, and distressed areas in existing pavements.
Mineral Fillers – Sand and fine particles of mineral material that exhibit specific characteristics that are helpful in the design and construction of asphalt pavements.
Pavement Base – The lower or underlying pavement course atop the subbase or natural earth and under the top or wearing layer.
Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement – Asphalt paving material that has been removed from a road or highway and crushed for reuse or recycling into new pavements.
Recycled Asphalt Mix – A mixture made by processing recycled asphalt pavement into new pavement. This is used in materials such as roofing shingles, glass, foundry sand, and slag can be used in the mix.
That about sums it up Vancouver! Thanks for listening
A bit of a short post Vancouver, but still important!
Binder – “glue” . With asphalt pavements, it is asphalt cement (see Monarch Paving Present Asphalt Speak Part 1). It may be modified to improve the properties of the asphalt.
Crumb Rubber – Asphalt rubber binding with a constancy between coffee grinds and peanut butter. Sounds delicious! I know some on the lower mainland that would try it
Hot Mix Asphalt (Asphalt Pavement) – A high quality, thoroughly controlled, engineered asphalt cement and mixing it with aggregates (see Monarch Paving Presents: Asphalt Speak Part 1)
Hot Mix Asphalt Overlay – one or more courses (layers) of Hot Mix Asphalt over existing asphalt. At Monarch Paving we use this technique to do quick, inexpensive fixes all over the greater Vancouver area. From Langley to Squamish and everywhere in between!
Starting this up Vancouver!
Aggregate: Gravel, crushed rock or sand used in pavement applications either by itself or mixed with asphalt.
Asphalt: also referred to as bitumen. It is a sticky, black, thick liquid. It is a semi-solid version of petroleum. It can be found naturally or manufactured.
Asphalt Cement: the “glue” in the asphalt mixture. It comes from crude oil.
Asphalt Pavement (hot mix asphalt): Made by heating asphalt cement and mixing it with aggregates (see aggregate)
Asphalt Plant or Asphalt Facility: A manufacturing facility that produces asphalt.
Asphalt Rubber Binder: Recycled, ground tire rubber. It is added to conventional asphalt cement.
